Renowned Nepal-born mountaineer Nirmal Purja “Nims Dai”has died after an avalanche struck his expedition on Broad Peak (8,047 metres) in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. He was 43. His expedition company, Elite Exped, confirmed his death after a two-day search and rescue operation failed to find survivors.
Avalanche During Broad Peak Expedition
The avalanche hit the expedition on Thursday while the team was attempting Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain. Rescue efforts involving experienced climbers, drones, and Pakistani authorities were hampered by difficult weather and the hazardous terrain. The incident claimed multiple lives from several countries.

His most celebrated accomplishment came in 2019, when he climbed all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in just six months and six days, shattering the previous record and inspiring climbers worldwide. The feat was documented in the widely acclaimed Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”
A former British Army Gurkha and UK Special Boat Service (SBS) soldier, Purja became one of the world’s most recognized mountaineers, known for pushing the limits of endurance while leading challenging expeditions across the Himalayas and Karakoram.
