Delhi Water Minister Atishi expressed concerns on Friday over the declining water production in the national capital, attributing it to reduced water flow reaching the Yamuna river. The AAP government has alleged that Haryana is withholding Delhi’s share of water.
“At present, less water is reaching the Yamuna river, resulting in a continuous decrease in water production in Delhi. Normally, Delhi produces 1005 MGD of water, but over the past week, this has been steadily declining,” she stated in a post on X in Hindi.
The minister highlighted that the water production figures reflect the severity of the situation: on June 6, production was at 1002 MGD, decreasing to 993 MGD on the next day, and further dropping to 990 MGD by June 8. The trend continued with production levels of 978 MGD on June 9, 958 MGD on June 10, and subsequent fluctuations in the following days.
“This decline in production has led to water shortages in many parts of Delhi. We urge everyone to use water judiciously,” Atishi emphasized.
The minister’s comments underscore Delhi’s ongoing struggle with a water crisis exacerbated by diminishing water availability from upstream sources.
