During his White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump voiced cautious optimism about ongoing peace efforts. Trump indicated that if his talks with Zelensky prove successful, he plans to hold a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed at resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
“If today goes well, we will move toward a trilateral,” Trump said, expressing his belief that Putin “wants to end the war.”
Zelensky, in turn, thanked Trump for personally hosting the discussions and for his efforts to bring an end to the bloodshed. “Thank you for the invitation and for your personal commitment to stop the killings and end this war,” the Ukrainian leader said.
Trump also assured that the US will play a role in shaping Ukraine’s long-term security framework. Before the talks, Zelensky had stated that he would seek firm Western security guarantees for Kyiv in his discussions with Trump and European leaders.
