Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for a comprehensive peace agreement to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, stressing that a ceasefire alone would not be sustainable. His remarks came after holding a high-level summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, followed by extensive discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key European leaders.
Trump described the Alaska talks with Putin as “very successful,” while also noting that he spoke with Zelenskyy and NATO leaders later in the evening. “We all determined that the best way to end this horrific war is a Peace Agreement — not just a temporary ceasefire, which often does not last,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
According to Trump, Zelenskyy will travel to Washington on Monday for talks at the Oval Office. If progress is made, Trump suggested a follow-up meeting with Putin could be scheduled in Washington soon after. “Millions of lives could be saved,” he added.
The Alaska summit lasted over three hours but ended without a concrete breakthrough. Both Trump and Putin cited progress, though they admitted key issues remain unresolved. “We’re not there yet, but we’ve made progress. There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” Trump said, calling the discussions “extremely productive.”
European leaders — including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen — later joined a joint call with Trump and Zelenskyy after the summit.
Zelenskyy confirmed he would meet Trump in Washington to “discuss all the details regarding ending the killing and the war,” thanking Trump for the invitation.
While the summit underscored symbolic progress, the absence of a ceasefire deal highlighted the challenges ahead. Trump, however, remained optimistic, suggesting a second Trump-Putin meeting in Washington could bring the two sides closer to an agreement.
