On Monday, the Supreme Court launched its five-day Special Lok Adalat aimed at resolving disputes through amicable settlements. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud encouraged public participation in the Special Lok Adalat to resolve cases swiftly and amicably.
CJI Chandrachud highlighted a past success story from a Lok Adalat, where a divorce case was resolved with both parties choosing to stay together despite earlier disputes. He noted, “In one case, a man seeking divorce and his wife seeking maintenance and child custody decided to reconcile when they came to Lok Adalat.”
The Special Lok Adalat, which runs from July 29 to August 3, is being conducted by seven Supreme Court benches. It is designed to address small cases, including service disputes, labor disputes, and land acquisition issues, as part of the Supreme Court’s 75th-anniversary celebrations.
The Adalat sessions, held daily after 2 PM, feature two Supreme Court judges, a senior advocate, and an Advocate-on-Record.
CJI Chandrachud remarked on the success of the Adalat, emphasizing the collaborative effort of the Bar, Supreme Court judges, and extensive groundwork by High Courts, State Governments, and Insurance Companies. He explained, “The aim is to settle minor cases that often reach the Supreme Court, including service disputes, labor disputes, land acquisition cases, motor accident claims, and cheque dishonor cases.”
He also expressed hope that the involvement of Bar members and judges in these panels would strengthen the message of unified justice delivery and contribute to making the Lok Adalat a regular feature at the Supreme Court.
