The Supreme Court issued guidelines on Monday to prevent the “disparaging” portrayal of persons with disabilities in visual media and films. The ruling, stemming from a plea filed by Nipun Malhotra, highlighted concerns over the derogatory depiction of differently abled individuals in the Hindi film ‘Aankh Micholi’.
Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, leading the bench, emphasized that terms like “cripple” and “spastic” have acquired negative connotations in society. The court mandated that the film certification body CBFC seek expert opinions before approving screenings.
The guidelines underscored the need for visual media to depict the diverse realities of people with disabilities, showcasing their challenges, successes, talents, and contributions to society. It stressed avoiding stereotypes and extremes, urging a balanced portrayal that respects their dignity and true experiences.
