Amidst severe storms and heavy rainfall, a section of the roof at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati collapsed on Sunday. The sudden collapse caused water to flow inside, resulting in chaos at the airport, which was already experiencing disruptions in flight operations due to adverse weather conditions. Fortunately, no injuries were reported due to the incident.

The airport authority had previously halted operations and redirected six flights to alternative destinations due to the severe storm. Utpal Baruah, Chief Airport Officer, mentioned that a large tree outside the Oil India complex, near the Adani Group-controlled facility, was uprooted by the storm, blocking a road leading to the airport.
Baruah explained that the collapsed portion of the airport’s roof was old and unable to withstand the impact of the harsh weather conditions, resulting in the ceiling breaking open and water entering the terminal. However, he reassured that the situation was under control and no injuries occurred.
Following the collapse, there was also a water leak inside the airport caused by overflowing outlet pipes. Baruah stated that the situation was being managed.
In an official statement, it was mentioned that flight operations were disrupted due to heavy rainfall and wind. The approach road to the airport was blocked by uprooted trees, while the roof outlets overflowed, causing water to enter the terminal building. However, operations have since returned to normal, with six diverted flights having resumed their schedules.
