Re-polling is currently ongoing at 11 booths within the Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency following reports of violence during the initial polling on April 19. Security measures have been heightened to prevent further disturbances in conflict-stricken Manipur.
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Manipur announced the re-polling after the Election Commission declared the initial polls void. As of April 19, Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 69.18 percent.
The Election Commission directed the fresh poll to be held on April 22 from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the specified polling stations. These include polling stations in various assembly constituencies such as Khurai, Kshetrigao, Thongju, Uripok, and Konthoujam.
Reports indicate incidents of violence during the initial polling, including firing at polling booths. One person was injured amid clashes at a polling booth.
All 32 assembly segments in the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency and 15 assembly segments in the Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency have already voted. The remaining 13 segments of Outer Manipur will vote in the second phase on April 26.
India’s Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1 to elect 543 members. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.
