Russia on Monday accused Ukraine of attempting to target President Putin’s residence and warned of retaliation. Moscow did not present evidence to support the allegation, which Kyiv rejected, calling it unfounded and aimed at disrupting ongoing peace negotiations.
The exchange added fresh strain to already fragile efforts to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Russia indicated it was reassessing its position in negotiations following the alleged incident, according to a report by Reuters.
International Reactions
US President Donald Trump also responded to the development, stating that President Putin had informed him about the alleged attack during a phone call on Monday. Trump said the incident had angered Putin but reiterated his view that a peace agreement could still be within reach.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said that while military actions were one thing, targeting a leader’s residence was inappropriate, particularly at a sensitive moment when diplomatic efforts were underway. He added that he had no independent confirmation of the incident and said US agencies were looking into the matter.
Earlier, Trump had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Florida, where he said negotiations were moving closer to a possible agreement, although significant disagreements—especially over territorial issues—remained unresolved.
Escalating Rhetoric
Meanwhile, President Putin struck a firm tone on Monday, instructing Russian forces to continue operations aimed at securing full control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region. The Kremlin reiterated demands for Ukraine to withdraw from remaining parts of the Donbas region still under Kyiv’s control.
According to Russian officials, Putin told Trump during their phone call that Moscow was reviewing its diplomatic stance following the reported drone incident. Ukrainian President Zelenskiy dismissed Russia’s claims as fabricated and accused the Kremlin of lacking genuine intent to end the war.
