Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic train accident involving the Kanchenjunga Express in West Bengal, offering condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. He announced that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased person, with Rs 50,000 allotted to each injured individual.
“The railway accident in West Bengal is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. I have spoken to officials and have been briefed on the situation. Rescue operations are underway to assist those affected,” PM Modi conveyed in a statement.
At least 15 passengers lost their lives and over 60 sustained injuries when a goods train collided with the Kanchenjunga Express in Darjeeling district. The incident occurred near Rangapani station, close to New Jalpaiguri in North Bengal. Rescue efforts are being conducted urgently, with coordination between Railways, NDRF, and SDRF teams.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that rescue operations are being conducted at a rapid pace. “This is an unfortunate accident in the NFR zone. Rescue operations are underway with full force. Railways, NDRF, and SDRF are working in close coordination. Senior officials are on-site,” Vaishnaw affirmed.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed shock over the incident and noted that the accident took place in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district.
