The Election Commission of India (EC) is set to hold a press conference on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 4:15 PM at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to announce a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters’ lists across India.
Officials confirmed that the exercise will cover a nationwide cleanup of electoral rolls, including removal of ineligible entries and updates to existing voter information.
Phase One of Pan-India SIR
In the first phase, the SIR will be conducted in 10 to 15 states, with priority given to states scheduled for Assembly elections in 2026. These include:
- Tamil Nadu
- West Bengal
- Kerala
- Assam
- Puducherry
The EC will defer the SIR in states where local body elections are underway, as election machinery will be preoccupied. Those states will undergo the revision in later phases.
Objectives of the SIR Exercise
The pan-India SIR aims to:
- Eliminate duplicate entries in the voter lists
- Remove names of deceased voters
- Correct errors in electoral rolls
- Ensure transparency and accuracy ahead of upcoming elections
In West Bengal, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya has called for a thorough and transparent revision of voter lists, citing concerns over duplicate entries and ineligible voters. However, the ruling Trinamool Congress has opposed the exercise in the state.
Preparations by the Election Commission
Earlier this week, the EC directed all Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) to finalize preparations for the SIR in their respective states and Union Territories. The Commission also reviewed progress on mapping current electors against the last SIR, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
This nationwide initiative follows the recent SIR exercise in poll-bound Bihar, where the final electoral roll was adjusted to 7.42 crore voters, with 65 lakh names removed from the draft list and 21.53 lakh new eligible voters added via Form 6 submissions.
