Chipmaker Nvidia announced on Monday a new strategic partnership with OpenAI, under which it plans to invest up to $100 billion in the artificial intelligence startup. The collaboration aims to train and deploy OpenAI’s future models as the company advances toward superintelligent AI.
The first phase of deployment is expected in the second half of 2026, leveraging Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform. The partnership will enable 10 gigawatts of compute power, marking a significant expansion of AI infrastructure for both firms.
Statements from Leadership
- Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO, said, “Nvidia and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to ChatGPT breakthroughs. This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward.”
- Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, added, “Compute infrastructure is the foundation of the economy of the future. We will leverage Nvidia’s systems to create new AI breakthroughs and scale them to empower people and businesses.”
- Greg Brockman, OpenAI cofounder and president, noted, “We’ve used Nvidia’s platform to build AI systems used by hundreds of millions worldwide. Deploying 10 gigawatts of compute with Nvidia will push the frontier of intelligence further.”
Under the agreement, OpenAI will designate Nvidia as its preferred strategic compute and networking partner for expanding its AI factory. The two companies will co-optimize their roadmaps, aligning OpenAI’s model and infrastructure software with Nvidia’s hardware and systems.
The partnership builds on existing collaborations with partners including Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate, all focused on creating advanced AI infrastructure.
With over 700 million weekly active users globally, OpenAI aims to accelerate its mission to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity. Nvidia and OpenAI plan to finalize the details of this strategic partnership in the coming weeks.
