In the aftermath of the Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy, the death toll has climbed to fifty-three, with over one hundred individuals undergoing treatment in various hospitals across Tamil Nadu. The incident has sparked significant political controversy, particularly with opposition AIADMK leaders criticizing the MK Stalin-led DMK government.
District officials report that out of 193 people who consumed the illicit liquor, 140 are stable, while others remain on ventilators. The state government has taken action by arresting seven individuals linked to the tragedy and has pledged rehabilitation for bootleggers seeking to reform after serving their sentences, backed by a ₹5 crore fund allocation.
Additionally, amidst the uproar in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced financial support for the education and hostel expenses of children orphaned by the tragedy. The Assembly session witnessed turmoil as AIADMK legislators staged protests and eventually walked out, demanding accountability from the government.
Outside the legislative halls, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla condemned the incident as ‘state-sponsored murder’, criticizing the DMK administration for what he termed as inadequate action against those responsible.
Chief Minister MK Stalin has also announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for those undergoing medical treatment.
