During a book launch event in the national capital, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar responded emphatically to a query about India’s role in the sub-continent and the Indian Ocean region, rejecting the notion of India being labeled as a bully.
According to reports from ANI, Jaishankar emphasized that “big bullies” don’t offer aid totaling USD 4.5 billion when neighboring countries are in distress.
Addressing the event on Sunday, Jaishankar remarked, “The significant change today in this part of the world is the transformation in India’s relations with its neighbors. When someone suggests that India is perceived as a big bully, one must consider that big bullies don’t provide four and a half billion dollars in aid when neighboring countries are facing challenges.”
He continued, “Big bullies don’t supply vaccines to other nations during a pandemic, or make exceptions to their own regulations to meet demands for food, fuel, or fertilizer due to conflicts elsewhere in the world.” A video clip of Jaishankar’s response to this remark circulated widely on social media platforms.
Jaishankar highlighted efforts to enhance connectivity between India and its neighboring countries, citing significant advancements in trade, investments, and travel with Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Maldives.
“Today, the level of connectivity, the volume of people traveling, the magnitude of trade, and the level of investments are all very encouraging. It’s not just about Nepal and Bangladesh; it’s also true for Sri Lanka, and even Maldives,” the EAM asserted.
Underlining the importance of active engagement in foreign policy matters for the general populace, Jaishankar emphasized the need for broader public involvement in understanding and shaping India’s diplomatic relations.
He stressed, “It’s crucial for all Indians to take a greater interest in foreign policy. While many perceive foreign policy as a complex and esoteric domain, it is essential for everyone to be involved and informed.”
Discussing India’s outreach to friendly neighbors and global partners during the Covid-19 pandemic, Jaishankar highlighted the unprecedented solidarity displayed during that period, demonstrating how the world stood by India during challenging times. He emphasized the interconnectedness of the global community and the need for individuals to recognize and engage with foreign affairs.
