The domestic stainless steel industry has urged the government to impose anti-dumping duties on low-cost imports that are threatening local manufacturers. According to Jindal Stainless Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal, the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) has filed a petition with the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) seeking an investigation into the dumping of stainless steel products from certain countries.
The DGTR, operating under the Ministry of Commerce, is India’s top authority for trade remedial measures, including anti-dumping, countervailing duties, and safeguard actions.
Petition Filed, Industry Awaits DGTR Investigation
Jindal revealed that the application was submitted at the end of June.
“DGTR usually takes two to three months to start an investigation,” he noted.
When asked about the urgency, especially in light of global trade uncertainties and recent US tariff measures, Jindal stressed:
“For a long time, we have been facing substandard dumped material from countries like China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Given the current trade volatility, it’s critical to protect our borders and support homegrown companies.”
Rising Imports Raise Concerns
Industry data shows that India’s stainless steel imports climbed to 1.73 million tonnes in FY25, with China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea being the leading sources, according to market research firm BigMint.
Jindal emphasised that the matter is urgent:
“This is where the growth is happening. India is the market that’s expanding, and we must safeguard it.”
