On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu praised the nation’s strong economic performance, calling it the fastest-growing major economy in the world with a GDP growth rate of 6.5% in FY 2023-24, despite global economic turbulence.
In her Independence Day 2025 address, President Murmu credited India’s robust domestic demand, controlled inflation, rising exports, and rapid infrastructure growth for the country’s economic resilience. She said, “All key indicators show the economy in the pink of health.”
Operation Sindoor: A Testament to Defence Self-Reliance and National Unity
Highlighting Operation Sindoor, India’s decisive military response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025, the President called it a symbol of unity and self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
“Our armed forces destroyed terrorist hubs across the border with strategic clarity and advanced indigenous technology,” she said, noting that the operation showcased India’s defence manufacturing capabilities and self-sufficiency in meeting critical security needs.
Infrastructure Boom – From Bharatmala to Kashmir Rail Link
President Murmu underlined achievements in road and railway infrastructure, including the Bharatmala project targeting 50,000 km of national highways, and the inauguration of the rail link in the Kashmir Valley — a milestone for regional connectivity.
She also praised the Indian Railways for adopting modern trains and high-tech coaches, marking a leap in passenger experience and safety.
Digital India, AI, and Inclusive Growth
Calling digital infrastructure a key driver of India’s growth, Murmu noted that nearly all villages now have 4G connectivity, paving the way for widespread digital payments adoption, where India has become a global leader.
She pointed to Artificial Intelligence as the next growth frontier, alongside continued investments in IT, space technology, and sports excellence.
Social Welfare and Swadeshi Push
Emphasising social sector spending, she reiterated the government’s focus on uplifting marginalised communities. She urged citizens to buy local products to strengthen India’s economy and boost self-reliance.
Global Headwinds and Strategic Diplomacy
President Murmu’s remarks come amid global trade wars and supply chain disruptions, including US sanctions on India for Russian oil imports and China’s export controls on rare earth magnets affecting electronics, automobiles, and renewable energy sectors.
Her address precedes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on 31 August 2025, where global economic cooperation will be a key agenda.
