Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized to India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar that India and China should develop a “correct strategic understanding” and view each other as partners rather than rivals.
According to a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry, China is prepared to uphold the principles of cordiality and mutual benefit in its relationship with India.
The meeting took place on August 18 in New Delhi, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) annual summit.
Jaishankar stressed that both countries should adopt a “candid and constructive” approach to move forward after a challenging period, guided by mutual respect, sensitivity, and shared interests. He also called for advancing the de-escalation process along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, where the militaries of both nations had faced a standoff for over four years.
