India has emerged as the largest supplier of smartphones to the United States, marking a major milestone in the country’s electronics manufacturing journey, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday. Speaking at the inauguration of Metro projects in Bengaluru, he highlighted that India’s electronics production has grown sixfold in the last 11 years, reaching ₹12 lakh crore in value.
According to the Minister, electronics exports have surged eight times during this period, touching ₹3 lakh crore.
“India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world,” Vaishnaw said, underlining the nation’s rising role in the global technology supply chain.
Smartphone Manufacturing Boom
Government data reveals a dramatic transformation in India’s mobile and electronics sector since 2014:
- In 2014, India had only two mobile manufacturing units; today, there are over 300.
- In FY14, just 26% of mobile phones sold in India were locally made; now 99.2% are manufactured domestically.
- The manufacturing value of mobile phones jumped from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4.22 lakh crore in FY24.
This surge aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to position India as a global technology hub and ensure wider access to advanced electronics.
Global Export Rise
India’s position as the top smartphone supplier to the US reflects its growing competitiveness in global exports. Alongside China and Vietnam, India is now a key manufacturing hub for electronics, with multinational companies diversifying production to reduce reliance on a single country.
