The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted increased rainfall activity accompanied by thunderstorms in several states like Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh until April 4. Conversely, heatwave conditions are predicted in states such as Karnataka and Maharashtra during the same period.
In other developments, Delhi experienced a maximum temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday, which is three notches above the season’s average. However, West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri areas faced disasters on Sunday due to heavy rainfall and stormy winds, resulting in loss of life.
IMD Rainfall Prediction
North India:
- IMD predicts rainfall or snowfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on March 31.
- Light rainfall is expected over north Punjab on March 31.
- Between April 3-6, rainfall or snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
- Rainfall has been forecasted over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh during April 3-5.
East India:
- Rainfall or snowfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is expected over Arunachal Pradesh between March 31 to April 4.
- Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim are likely to experience rainfall between March 31 to April 4.
- Heavy rainfall is predicted over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on March 31 and April 1.
- Very heavy rainfall is anticipated over Assam and Meghalaya on March 31.
IMD Heatwave Prediction
The IMD has issued heatwave, warm night, hot, and humid weather warnings for the next five days.
- Heatwave conditions are likely over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Karnataka during April 2-4.
- Similar conditions are expected over Rayalaseema during April 1-4 and over Telangana on April 1 and 2.
- Warm night conditions are anticipated over Odisha during April 2-4, Maharashtra during March 31 to April 3, and Marathwada on April 1 and 2.
- Warm night conditions are also expected over Telangana on March 31 and April 1.
- Hot and humid weather is likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal during March 31 to April 4, with similar conditions in Odisha during April 2-4.
IMD Alert: Maximum Temperature Rise
Several states are experiencing rising temperatures, triggering predictions of heatwave conditions.
- There is a forecast for temperatures to fall and rise over the next five days in various regions.
- Maximum temperatures are expected to rise by 2-3°C in parts of Northwest India over the next two days, followed by a subsequent increase.
- In East India, temperatures are predicted to rise by 2-3°C from April 2 for the next three days.
- Maharashtra is likely to see a rise in temperatures by 2-3°C from April 3.
- Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh may experience a temperature increase of 2-3°C over the next three days.
