Taxpayers have the right to report any mistakes they find in their Annual Information Statement (AIS). The tax department will verify the source when notified of the issue. If discrepancies persist, a notification under the e-verification process may be issued.
What is the Annual Information Statement (AIS)?
The AIS provides a comprehensive view of a taxpayer’s information, displayed in Form 26AS. Taxpayers can give feedback on the information shown in AIS. It includes both the reported value and the modified value (i.e., value after considering taxpayer feedback) under each section (such as TDS, SFT, Other information).
Objectives of AIS:
- Displays complete information to the taxpayer with an option for online feedback.
- Promotes voluntary compliance and seamless prefilling of returns.
- Deters non-compliance.
How to Track Activity History in AIS:
To view activity history, click the Activity History icon on the homepage. This section provides an overview of activities, each with a system-generated ID (Activity ID), along with the activity date, description, and details.
Handling Discrepancies:
If there is a discrepancy between AIS information and your submitted income tax return, the tax department may request clarification. If no feedback is provided to correct a mistake, it may be assumed that the AIS information is correct.
Submitting Feedback on AIS Information:
- Log in and select ‘Annual Information Statement (AIS)’ under the ‘Services’ tab.
- Parts A and B of AIS will be shown. Select the incorrect information and choose ‘Optional’ to submit feedback.
- From the drop-down menu, select the applicable option from the seven available:
a. Information is correct
b. Transfer not in the nature of sale
c. Income is not taxable
d. Information is not fully correct
e. Information relates to other PAN/Year
