In a historic decision, the Government of India has approved the first-ever cadre review of the Border Security Force (BSF) since its formation in 1965, adding nearly 4,000 new posts between the constable and inspector ranks.
According to a BSF spokesperson, the cadre restructuring for Group B and Group C personnel will lead to immediate promotions for 23,710 personnel, significantly boosting morale and career growth opportunities.
Key Highlights of the BSF Cadre Review:
- Additional manpower: Net gain of 3,994 posts in jawan and subordinate officer ranks.
- Immediate promotions: Orders issued for 8,116 personnel across different ranks.
- Ranks covered: Constable → Head Constable → Assistant Sub-Inspector → Sub-Inspector → Inspector/Subedar Major.
- Objective: Improve promotion avenues, reduce stagnation, and enhance professional development.
The decision, approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs and cleared by the Ministry of Finance, comes shortly after Operation Sindoor and is seen as a major step to strengthen the 2.65 lakh-strong force tasked with guarding India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as handling internal security duties.
BSF officers in Group A are recruited directly or come from the Indian Police Service (IPS) on deputation, while Group B and C personnel join from the constable level and move up the ranks.
