Lakshadweep tourism officer, Imthias Mohammed T B, informed ANI news agency that there has been a significant surge in interest in Lakshadweep since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the island earlier this year. He stated that both domestic and international tourists have been making inquiries about Lakshadweep ever since PM Modi promoted the island on social media.
“The impact is huge; we are receiving lots of inquiries,” stated the Lakshadweep tourism officer.
In response to the heightened interest, authorities plan to deploy more cruise ships to enhance connectivity to the island.
PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep in January included trying snorkeling, during which he encouraged adventure enthusiasts to add Lakshadweep to their travel list.
Following PM Modi’s visit, relations between India and Maldives experienced a boost. Consequently, Indian tourists, who previously frequented the Maldives, diverted their interest to Lakshadweep.
The Maldives faced backlash after derogatory remarks against India and PM Modi were made by three Maldivian officials on social media, prompting Indian tourists to explore Lakshadweep instead.
In response to the increased interest in Lakshadweep, budget carrier IndiGo announced last month a direct flight between Bengaluru and Agatti. Currently, only Alliance Air operates services to Agatti, while regional carrier FLY91 plans to commence services to the destination this month.
