The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Monday that following Bihar, a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will now be conducted across 12 additional states and Union Territories beginning tomorrow.
🗳️ States and UTs Covered Under SIR
The revision exercise will take place in:
Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Among these, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry are scheduled to hold assembly elections in 2026. Interestingly, Assam, which also goes to polls next year, has not been included in the list.
🔍 Purpose of the Revision
The ECI said the exercise is aimed at ensuring accuracy in the electoral rolls, which must be revised periodically before elections or whenever required. The Commission cited reasons such as migration leading to multiple registrations, non-removal of deceased voters, and wrongful inclusion of ineligible or foreign voters.
According to the ECI, Special Intensive Revisions have been conducted eight times since 1951, with the last one held between 2002 and 2004, over 21 years ago.
