India’s domestic air passenger traffic declined 2.94% year-on-year to 1.26 crore flyers in July 2025, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This compares with 1.29 crore passengers carried in July 2024.
The decline comes against the backdrop of the Air India Ahmedabad–London Gatwick plane crash on June 12, which killed 260 people, raising safety concerns and prompting operational checks.
Airline Market Share Highlights (July 2025)
- Air India Group: Market share slipped after carrying 33.08 lakh passengers, losing 1% share month-on-month. The airline had cut 5% domestic capacity in late June to conduct fleet checks.
- IndiGo: Strengthened its dominance, raising its market share to 65.2% (from 64.5%), despite flying fewer passengers month-on-month (82.15 lakh vs 87.74 lakh in June).
- Akasa Air & SpiceJet: Both gained marginally, with market share rising to 5.5% and 2%, respectively.
Load Factor & On-Time Performance
- Air India Group: Load factor dropped to 78.6% in July, down from 81.5% in June.
- Other carriers: Also witnessed lower load factors compared to June.
- IndiGo: Delivered the highest on-time performance at 91.4% across six metro airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad).
