The Congress criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, pointing out that while Rahul Gandhi will make his third visit to Manipur since violence erupted in May last year, the PM has not visited the state even briefly. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh remarked, “Today, while the non-biological PM travels to Moscow, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha heads to Assam and Manipur.”
Ramesh also commented on Modi’s visit to Moscow, suggesting that claims about the PM’s role in pausing the Russia-Ukraine war could become even more extravagant following this trip.
Highlighting Rahul Gandhi’s frequent visits to Manipur since the crisis began, Ramesh criticized Modi for not finding time to visit Manipur or meet with its Chief Minister and other political leaders, despite the serious situation that unfolded there on May 3, 2023.
Modi is currently scheduled to visit Russia on July 8 and 9 for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit, while Gandhi plans to visit Manipur to assess the situation on the ground, interacting with locals and visiting relief camps in various districts.
Since the outbreak of violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities last year, Manipur has witnessed significant unrest, resulting in casualties and displacements, with ongoing efforts to restore normalcy by both the Centre and the state government.
