Banks in select cities of India will remain closed on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in observance of Nuakhai and the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) region-wise holiday calendar.
Banks in other parts of the country will remain open. The RBI holiday calendar, published under the Negotiable Instruments Act, governs the closure of banks for national, regional, and religious holidays. On such days, cheque and promissory note transactions are not processed.
Region-Wise Observance
- Goa: The second day of Ganesh Chaturthi, known as Navyachi Pancham, involves offering fresh paddy in puja to seek blessings for a good harvest.
- Odisha: Nuakhai is celebrated by offering the first grains of rice to deities, followed by family gatherings, music, and dance.
Banking Transactions During Holidays
Even on bank holidays, customers can continue to use:
- Online and mobile banking services
- UPI payments and bank apps
- ATMs for cash withdrawals
Digital banking ensures that transactions remain uninterrupted despite branch closures.
