AT&T reported on March 30th that a data set leaked on the “dark web” roughly two weeks prior has affected approximately 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders, as per the company’s preliminary assessment of the breach.
The data appears to be dated from 2019 or earlier, according to AT&T’s statement, and they haven’t found evidence of unauthorized access to their systems resulting from this incident.
The company has yet to determine whether the data originated from AT&T or one of its vendors. While the incident hasn’t significantly disrupted its operations, AT&T is still investigating the data’s source.
In response, AT&T has reached out to all affected individuals, resetting passcodes for the 7.6 million current customers impacted. Additionally, they’re offering credit monitoring services where applicable.
It’s noteworthy that AT&T’s 5G network currently serves approximately 290 million people across the United States.
Previously, in February, AT&T experienced an outage that affected calls and text messages for numerous users in the US, prompting federal inquiries.
