On Wednesday morning, a significant earthquake struck the eastern region of Taiwan, including its capital, Taipei. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.4, causing considerable tremors in the area. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Hualien City in Taiwan, with a depth recorded at 34.8 kilometers (21.6 miles). As a result of the seismic activity, tsunami warnings were issued not only for Taiwan but also for parts of southern Japan.
The Director of Taipei’s Seismology Centre informed international media outlets that this earthquake marked the most powerful seismic event experienced in the region in the past 25 years. The quake’s intensity underscores the significant impact it has had on the affected areas, prompting heightened concerns and emergency responses.
